I finally built my high school rankings section of my site. This has been a long time coming!

History

The first time I ever tried ranking high school football was in the fall of 1979. I was 12 years old and I had a notebook where I kept track of all the local schools and wrote down the scores for each week. I can’t remember how I calculated the power ratings for each school but it seemed to work pretty well. I kept this up for a few more seasons until I started playing high school football and then I put it away.

I got back into keeping track of high school football after I had developed the first version of my ranking system. I was using it for college football and the NFL so I thought I should use it for high school. So beginning with the 2000 season, I started to track all the high schools in the state of Virginia. I literally kept this up for 20 years. I published these rankings on various web pages but never really kept it organized. Then in 2020 COVID hit and Virginia cancelled football in the fall. At that point, I had grown tired of typing in scores and decided to give it up. So for the next several seasons, I didn’t bother keeping track of high school football.

2025 Season

But this year, after building my website to track college football and the NFL, I decided to give high school football another shot. But this time, I wanted to break down the rankings by classification, region and district. So I’ve finally done it and I’m excited to keep up with this season.

Hopefully, I’ll be able to retrofit previous seasons into my rankings as time permits.
